Kawai MS-130 Master Series Upright Piano – New, Polished Ebony

The Kawai MS-130 is a premium 130cm upright piano and the central model in Kawai’s new Master Series, combining substantial acoustic scale with the refined touch, tonal detail and craftsmanship of Kawai’s highest-level upright piano range.

The Master Series has been developed around the idea that an upright piano can offer far more than practicality. The MS-130 brings together a carefully developed solid spruce soundboard, extended key length, hand-wound bass strings and specially selected hammer materials to create an instrument with impressive depth, control and expressive range.

Its tapered solid spruce soundboard is made from straight-grained, quartersawn spruce selected to Kawai’s demanding standards. A strengthened back structure provides a stable foundation for the instrument, while the pressure bar and stainless steel bearing contribute to precise attack and clarity through the upper register.

The MS-130 features hand-wound bass strings inspired by those used on Shigeru Kawai grand pianos, together with mahogany hammer mouldings and T-stapled, double-felted hammers. These details are distinctive to the Master Series and give the MS-130 a level of tonal refinement rarely encountered in an upright piano.

At the keyboard, Kawai’s Millennium III action incorporates ABS-Carbon components and three die-cast aluminium action brackets, while longer keys provide greater leverage and a more even response across the playing surface. NEOTEX white keys and ebony black keys offer a tactile surface suited to precise, expressive playing.

The MS-130 also features a sostenuto pedal alongside the soft and damper pedals, with a dedicated muffler mechanism that can be used simultaneously with the sostenuto. This is an unusually sophisticated combination for an upright piano, allowing both advanced pedal work and quieter playing.

Visually, the Master Series has a distinctive cabinet with softly rounded proportions, a lift-up topboard inspired by a grand piano, bird’s-eye maple interior detailing and polished brass fittings.

At 130 cm high, 153 cm wide and 64 cm deep, the Kawai MS-130 offers a substantial acoustic presence without requiring the footprint of a grand piano.
