Kawai MS-123 Master Series Upright Piano – New, Polished Ebony
The new Kawai Master Series represents the pinnacle of Kawai’s upright piano range, bringing together advanced engineering, carefully selected materials and a level of detailed craftsmanship normally associated with premium professional instruments.
The Kawai MS-123 is the most compact model in the Master Series, standing at 123 cm high while retaining the same uncompromising approach to touch, tone and construction found throughout the range. It is a sophisticated upright piano designed for pianists who want substantially more from an upright, without moving to the footprint of a grand piano.
At the heart of the MS-123 is Kawai’s acclaimed Millennium III upright action, incorporating ABS-Carbon components and three precision die-cast aluminium action brackets for strength, consistency and responsive control. The extended key length gives the pianist greater leverage and a more even response across the keyboard, while NEOTEX white keys and natural ebony black keys provide a tactile playing surface designed for expressive playing.
The acoustic design is where the Master Series becomes particularly distinctive. The MS-123 features a solid spruce soundboard made from carefully selected, straight-grained quartersawn spruce and strategically tapered to enhance its tonal response. Its five-post back structure provides a stable foundation for the instrument, while a redesigned pressure bar and stainless steel bearing help produce a precise attack and clear resonance.
Kawai has also given particular attention to the bass register. The MS-123 uses hand-wound bass strings produced by skilled craftsmen, with the design drawing on the approach used for Shigeru Kawai grand pianos. Combined with mahogany hammer mouldings, T-stapled double-felted hammers and additional underfelt, these details are designed to give the instrument warmth, depth and fine control across the dynamic range.
Another particularly unusual feature of the Master Series is the ability to use the sostenuto pedal and muffler mechanism simultaneously. Alongside the soft and damper pedals, this gives the pianist a level of expressive and practical flexibility rarely found on an upright piano, from detailed pedal work to quieter playing at home.
The cabinet has been designed specifically for the Master Series, with softly rounded proportions and a lift-up topboard inspired by a grand piano. Bird’s-eye maple interior detailing and polished brass fittings add a refined finish, while the overall design retains a clean and contemporary presence.
At 153 cm wide, 123 cm high and 63 cm deep, the MS-123 offers an impressive combination of scale and practicality. It brings the character, specification and attention to detail of Kawai’s new Master Series into a relatively compact upright piano.
